Between the mid-1800s and the early 1900s, the copper industry on the Keweenaw Peninsula exploded into life; the heritage of this economy is preserved at the sites of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. Visitors can take underground mine tours and see exhibits at a number of historical museums including the Coppertown Mining Museum, Hanka Homestead Museum and the Houghton County Historical Museum. Regional outdoor pursuits include boating, fishing, hiking and cross-country skiing. The park is separated into two units, the park's headquarters are in Calumet and a secondary mine area, Quincy, is located 12 miles to the southwest.
